The Adalaj stepwell was built in 1499 by Queen Rudabai. The stepwell or Vav, as it is called in Gujarati, is intricately carved and is several stories in depth. The designs on its walls and pillars include leaves, flowers, birds, fish and other ornamental designs. In the past, these stepped wells were used by travelers and caravans as meeting and resting-places during summer, since their cool interiors offered unbelievable respite from the scorching sun outside. --- "Forbidden" sunset ;) ---
